English as a Second Language (ESL)
With the majority of the student population here at Auburn West Public School being identified as having a Language Background Other Than English, the role of specialist ESL teachers therefore play a significant part in providing support to the students and class teachers around the school.
New Arrivals Program (NAP)
At Auburn West, there are three targeted support programs which provide intensive support to students who have just arrived from overseas with minimal or no proficiency in the English language. ESL students who are engaged in the New Arrivals Program are provided with opportunities to develop the fundamental skills needed to participate in everyday situations.
This is usually a specific withdrawal program designed to teach the students survival classroom and playground language, as well as facilitate transition to school using English. New arrivals support is temporary and withdrawal from the mainstream class does not go beyond a year.

Specialist ESL Support
In addition to the New Arrivals Program, ESL instruction is also organised and programmed across the whole school in terms of providing language learning support during guided reading and L3, engaging students in developmental play and targeting student groups who need further assistance in an identified area. Support is carried out through collaborative or team teaching programs.
